Want to know how to upload your work to a Google Drive folder, then upload to Canvas to submit an assignment? Follow the steps below. Scroll to the bottom of this article to watch a video tutorial.

Step 1: Set up a Google Drive folder

  • Log in to your ACM Gmail account, and navigate to your Google Drive. You can find it directly here: https://drive.google.com/
  • On the left hand side of the screen, select the "New" icon, then select "Folder" from the drop down menu (See screenshots)

  • Give your folder a name. It could be the title of your submission for an assignment for example. Click "Create" to save
  • Your folder should appear open for you on the screen. Select the folder to open. It should look blank, like this:

Step 2: Upload your work into the Google Drive folder

  • You can drag and drop your files into this folder, OR you can select the "New" button again and select "File Upload" from the drop down menu.
  • (If you have the image/document on your mobile, you can either upload directly to the Google Drive app, or send the image/document to your email address, to then access on a computer.)
  • You should see an upload bar in the right hand corner of the screen. Once the file has been uploaded, it will appear for you. (See screenshot)

Please note - Dependant on the size of your upload, this may take a while to upload to your Google Drive. Please allow as much time as possible to avoid missing any deadlines.

Step 3: Change your security settings

Google automatically makes the documents, images, and anything else you save to your drive private. If you want to share certain files or images with others, you'll need to change the security settings.

1) To share a Google Drive folder:

  • Inside your folder, you should see a drop down arrow to the right of the title. Click this, and select "Get Link" (See screenshot)

  • A pop up window should appear. Under "General Access" select the Drop down arrow next to "Restricted" and select "Anyone with the link" (See screenshot)

  • Give it a minute to update, then click "Copy link", when the page looks like this (See screenshot). This will copy the link to your Google Drive folder to your clipboard. After you've clicked "Copy link", click "Done" to exit the window.

You can then copy and paste the link in an email, text, or Canvas page to share with others.

2) To share a specific image, or document:

  • Right click on the image/document you'd like to share, and select "Get Link" (See screenshot)

(If you are submitting an assignment to Canvas, copy the link and move down to Step 4)

Step 4: Upload to Canvas

- Go to your Assignment on Canvas, and select "Start Assignment", then select "Website URL" on the submission box (See screenshot)
- Paste the Google Drive link in to the "Website URL" box. You can always add a comment to say what the Google Drive folder contains.

- Hit Submit Assignment to complete
